Die hl. Fotinija (russ. Swetlana) lebte um das Jahr 30 in Sychar in Samarien, dem heutigen Nablus in Palästina. Jesus begegnete nach dem Zeugnis des Johannes-Evangeliums (4, 5-30. 39-41) der hl. Fotinija bei Johannes seiner namenlosen Frau, am Brunnen vor der Stadt Sychar, wo er von der anstrengenden Wanderung ausruhte, während die Frau Wasser holte. Er sprach mit ihr, obwohl sie eine Frau war und obwohl sie zu der von den Juden gemiedenen Gruppe der Samaritaner gehörte. Im Lauf des Gesprächs legte sie ein Bekenntnis zu ihm ab, als dem von Gott gesandten Messias, und war damit der erste Mensch, der in Jesus den Christus erkannte.
