Eleutherius wurde als Junge, nachdem er seinen Vater verloren hatte, von seiner Mutter Anthia zum römischen Gemeindevorsteher Anenkletos gebracht, der ihn in den heiligen Schriften lehrte. Schon als junger Mann zum Bischof von Illyricum erwählt und geweiht, bekehrte er viele Menschen. In den Verfolgungen unter Kaiser Hadrian erlitt er den Martertod; als seine Mutter Anthia den Leichnam betrauerte, schlugen die Soldaten ihr den Kopf ab.
