Der hl. Theopemptos ward Bischof von der Stadt Nikomedia in Bithynien (heut. Izmit, Türkei). Er wurde verfolgt auf Befehl von Kaiser Diokletian, und sollte dem Christentum entsagen oder aber mit vergifteten Speisen getötet werden. Der Heilige Martyrer blieb aber standhaft und das Gift, vom Zauberer Theonas vorbereitet, konnte ihm nichts anhaben. Der Zauberer Theonas selbst ließ sich daraufhin taufen und erhielt als Christ den Namen Synesios. Nach zahlreichen vergeblichen Torturen wurde der hl. Theopemptos enthauptet, der hl. Synesios lebend begraben. Das geschah im Jahre 303 in Nikomedia.
