Der hl. Zotikos war vornehmer Römer, der dem römischen Kaiser Konstantin dem Großen (310–337) zu Dienste stand. Nach seinem Umzug nach Byzanz wurde er Priester und kümmerte sich um Weisen und Armen. Der hl. Zotikos wird als Gründer des ersten Waisenhauses von Byzanz, der Hauptstadt des oströmischen Reiches erkannt. Der Heilige starb um Jahre 340 als Martyrer.
