Geboren wurde er in einer Bauernfamilie in dem Dorfe Zabenskij pogost bei Nowgorod am Ende des 15. Jhds. Schon als Kind kam er 1505 in das Kloster des hl. Savva von Krypeck bei Pskov. Nach zehnjährigem Mönchsleben in der Gemeinschaft des Klosters zog er sich in die Waldeinöde am Fluss Seremlja neben der Stadt Ostaschkov in den Valdaj-Hügeln zurück, wo er 13 Jahre ein streng asketisches Leben führte. Aufgrund einer Vision machte er sich dann zum Seliger-See auf, um dort auf der Insel Stolobnoe, 7 km von Ostaschkov entfernt, eine Einsiedelei zu gründen; in der er 26 Jahre lebte. Ein Abt eines nahen Klosters brachte ihm dabei immer die hl. Kommunion. Er starb auf seinen Krücken gestützt sitzend am 7. Dezember 1554.
