Der hl. Leo, Sohn einer frommen und reichen Familie, wurde schon in jungen Jahren Bischof von Catania, auf Sizilien. Viele Wunder werden ihm zugeschrieben, daher der Beiname "Thaumaturgos", "der Wundertäter". Als ein Ketzer Namens Iliodor seinen Glauben prüfen wollte, stieg der Heilige zusammen mit ihm ins Feuer. Das fügte dem Heiligen keinen Schaden zu, sondern seinem Herausforderer.
