Stylianos erbte ein großes Vermögen von seinen Eltern, das er an Arme verteilte. Er verließ seine Heimatstadt Adrianopolis in Paphlagonien - heute Ruinen bei Eskipazar - und trat in ein Kloster ein, wo sein Eifer und seine Frömmigkeit die anderen Mönche provozierte. Deshalb verließ er das Kloster, um alleine in einer Höhle in der Wüste zu leben mit Gebet und Fasten. Sein Ruf verbreitete sich, viele Menschen suchten ihn auf, um seine Lehre zu hören oder von ihm geheilt zu werden. Besonders bekannt wurde er ob seiner Liebe zu Kindern. In der Stunde seines Todes wurde Stylianos' Gesicht plötzlich strahlend und ein Engel erschien, um seine Seele zu retten.
