塔克斯奥蒂斯是迦太基的士兵。他的一生是在罪孽中渡过的，但是最终进行了悔过，离开了军队，并以主喜悦的方式生活。当塔克斯奥蒂斯和他的妻子在城郊的一个庄园中生活时，他同农场工人的妻子通奸。不久之后塔克斯奥蒂斯遭毒蛇咬，没过多久就死亡了。塔克斯奥蒂斯死亡6个小时后又活了。之后，在第四天，他讲述了他在死亡之后所经历的各个审判关口，直到他来到了对他的通奸罪进行的审判。在那里，他掉进了一个黑暗的魔鬼深渊，但是一个天使为他说好话，以使他重新进入他的身躯为他最后的罪过进行忏悔。塔克斯奥蒂斯忏悔了40日，从一个教堂走到另一个教堂，用他的头敲打门和门槛，向人们讲述罪人落入到地狱所面临的凄惨，并请求人们不要犯罪，并要为以前的罪忏悔。到了第40天，塔克斯奥蒂斯终于欣然地走进了上帝慈父的国度。
