当阿纳斯塔西还是西奈山的修士时，他被任命为安提约希亚的牧首，当时正是查士丁尼在位时期。阿纳斯塔西被任命为牧首，是因为他周济别人、圣洁的生活、伟大的灵性修养以及坚定的信仰等美德。查士丁尼皇帝陷入了幻影说异端之中（这个异端指出，基督的受难只是表象而已，不是真实的），而君士坦丁堡的牧首艾弗提希和阿纳斯塔西坚决地斥责该异端。皇帝将艾弗提希进行流放，同时还打算流放阿纳斯塔西，但是皇帝在他身上没有找到任何指责。不管怎样，在查士丁尼临终前感到非常懊悔，恢复了艾弗提希的牧首职务，但是查士丁尼的继任者尤斯丁以无中生有的虚言将阿纳斯塔西进行流放。阿纳斯塔西在流放生活中渡过了23年的时间，在玛弗里基在位期间，恢复了阿纳斯塔西的安提约希亚牧首的职务。他管理上帝的教会长达6年的时间，于公元599年去世。
