奥多若出生于加拉提亚省的斯克昂村。从10岁起，他就严格要求自己：斋戒、彻夜祷告，效仿在他家生活过的长老斯特凡为榜样。他的妈妈玛利亚是一个富有的寡妇，她打算让儿子从军。圣乔治在梦中向她显现告诉她：德奥多若将服侍天国的王，而不是地上的王。圣乔治也曾经多次向德奥多若显现告诉他这件事；魔鬼将德奥多若置于危险境地，而圣乔治也曾多次将他从这危险中拯救出来。圣母也曾经几次向他显现。德奥多若过着艰苦的禁欲生活，由此超越了他同时代的禁欲者。他经常忍饥埃饿、铁链束身，并彻夜站立祷告。他之所以这样作是因为他想将自己的灵魂同上帝的爱连接在一起，并使自己的灵魂驾驭自己的身体。为了回报德奥多若的爱，富有怜悯的上帝也用爱回报了他。上帝赋予德奥多若战胜恶灵以及人类所有疾病的能力。他同时也是众所周知的奇迹的创造者。由于德奥多若的圣洁和忠诚，他被选为阿纳斯塔西奥波利斯的主教，但是这并不是出于他的意愿。就这样，他管理教会长达11年的时间，之后他向上帝祷告，希望能够继续他潜心修行的禁欲生活。之后，他返回了他的修道院，在高龄之际，将自己的灵魂交托在上帝的手中，为了上帝，他情愿忍受更多的痛苦。德奥多若于公元613年去世，也就是希拉克略刚刚开始进行统治时期。
