德奥多若出生于君士坦丁堡的富裕家庭中。德奥多若在年轻时离开了父母的家和家产，来到了色雷斯的一个修道院中。在那里，德奥多若潜心修行，过着严格的修道生活。他只睡在石头上，以便能够少睡觉。德奥多若到处游历，只穿一件山羊毛皮袄，因此被人们称为“穿羊毛袄的德奥多若”。为了拯救自己的灵魂，德奥多若过着极端艰苦的禁欲生活，由此，上帝赋予他在世时以及死后施行奇迹的能力。德奥多若于公元400年平安去世。他的圣髑经常流出圣油来。
