10 世纪初期，拜占庭处在罗马努斯的统治之下。牧首斯特梵去世时，罗马努斯的儿子特奥菲拉克特年仅16 岁。国王希望他的儿子成为牧首，因为早在儿子年幼的时候，他就向他的儿子作出了这个许诺。因为儿子尚且太年轻，国王不好意思将自己年轻的儿子封为牧首，于是，牧首的职位由特里芬来担任。特里芬是一个普通的人，但是他却非常圣洁和虔诚。特里芬担任牧首3 年的时间。当国王的儿子年满20 岁的时候，国王想不惜任何代价将特里芬从牧首的职位上撤换下来，以便使他的儿子能够接任牧首的职务。上帝的圣人特里芬不想自愿地放弃牧首的职务，没有别的原因，他只是在想，这么年轻的人担任牧首这个重任将会引起强烈的反响。在一个恶毒的主教的阴谋下，无辜的特里芬在空白的纸上签了字。后来，在皇宫中，那张空白的纸竞被写成了牧首辞职的声明，国王也随即接纳了。结果，在教会内出现了纷乱，因为信徒们和教士们都支持神圣的特里芬。而后，国王强迫老牧首退职，并将他送到一座修道院，他的儿子成了牧首。圣特里芬在这座修道院中潜心修行2 年零5 个月，于公元933 年安息主怀。
