在圣像破坏运动异端期间，皇帝亚美尼亚人莱翁将约安同他恩师德卡颇利的圣格里哥利和赞美诗作者约熙福一同进行迫害。当格里哥利离世后，约安成为君士坦丁堡的德卡颇利修道院的院长。在成为修道院院长后，约安对自己的修行生活更加严格，以便能够进入上帝的天国。约安于公元820年平安离世。在约安去世后，圣约熙福在靠近圣格里哥利的坟墓旁将他荣耀地安葬。
