艾弗斯特拉提非常富有，他受基督之爱所感动，将全部财产都奉献给教会，并进入了佩切尔修道院成为一名修士。1097年，波洛夫切人向基辅发动战争，他们洗劫了修道院，并杀死了很多基督徒，包括一些修士。艾弗斯特拉提同一些基督徒被沦为奴隶，被卖到了科尔索姆城的一个犹太人家。这个犹太人家耻笑基督信仰，并企图迫使基督徒改信他们的犹太教。看到已经没有其他选择余地，他们决定宁可死亡也不改变基督信仰。艾弗斯特拉提鼓励基督徒坚信到底。他们都因为饥饿而死亡，所有的人都在三天、四天或七天之后被饿死了。因为习惯了斋戒，所以唯独艾弗斯特拉提在14天没有进食的情况下仍然活着。犹太人眼看着花钱买来的奴隶都死光了，不禁大为恼火，并将怒气都放在艾弗斯特拉提身上，要把他钉死在十字架上。艾弗斯特拉提在十字架上赞美上帝，并预言犹太人将会死于迫在眉睫的横祸。犹太人恼怒了，用矛枪结束了他的生命。上帝的圣人将灵魂交在了他的拯救者的手中。艾弗斯特拉提的尸体被仍到大海里，但是不久之后便浮出了海面，并施行了无数奇迹。在艾弗斯特拉提死后不久，拜占庭皇帝下令：科尔索姆城的犹太人接受惩罚，因为他们对基督徒的邪恶行径。基督徒的迫害者被吊死在树上，如同犹大一样接受了应有的惩罚。
