阿纳斯塔西出生于波斯，原名为马棍达特，这是个异教徒的名字。当皇帝希拉克略同波斯人交战时，马棍达特投奔了基督徒，来到了耶路撒冷，在那里他接受了浸礼，得名阿纳斯塔西。对他来说仅仅接受浸礼是不够的，为了全心全意服侍上帝，他剪发成了一名修士。在日常的修行生活中，他还乐于阅读殉道圣徒的传记。阅读时他痛哭流涕，把书本都浸湿了，并热切地向往殉道。上帝最终将殉道者的花冠戴在了他的头上。在多年的监狱生活中，他遭受了严刑拷打，直到乔兹罗斯皇帝判处他死刑为止。阿纳斯塔西被溺水而死，从水中捞出来之后，又遭到了斩首，刽子手将他的头交给了皇帝。阿纳斯塔西于公元628年1月22日在尼尼微附近的贝萨罗城殉道。
