提摩泰是七十使徒之一。他出生于利考尼亚的里斯特拉，父亲是希腊人，母亲是犹太人。使徒帕弗罗赞美提摩泰的母亲和外祖母，因为她们对信仰非常虔诚：“纪念你的眼泪，昼夜切切地想要见你，好叫我满心快乐。想到你心里无伪之信，这信是先在你外祖母罗以和你母亲友尼基心里的，我深信也在你的心里”（致提摩泰书二／提后／弟后1：4－5）。提摩泰起初在里斯特拉遇到这位伟大的圣徒，并亲眼目睹了帕弗罗医治天生瘸腿的病人。之后，提摩泰几乎一直都跟随着帕弗罗，同他一起去亚该亚、马其顿、意大利和西班牙。他平易近人，对信仰充满巨大的热忱，是一位卓越的讲道者。提摩泰在传播和建立基督信仰的过程中作出了巨大贡献。帕弗罗称提摩泰为他“信仰上的儿子”。“作基督耶稣使徒的帕弗罗，写信给那因信主作我真儿子的提摩泰。愿恩惠、怜悯、平安，从父上帝和我们主耶稣基督归与你”（致提摩泰书一／提前／弟前1：1－2）。在帕弗罗殉道后，提摩泰追随福音书的作者约安作为老师。但是当皇帝德门蒂安将约安从以弗所驱逐到帕特摩斯岛的时候，提摩泰继续留在以弗所任主教。在异教徒的一次敬拜偶像的节日里，对基督徒怀有恶意的异教徒化装偷袭了提摩泰，将其杀死，时约公元93年。之后，提摩泰的圣髑被转运到君士坦丁堡的十二圣徒大教堂内安葬，在提摩泰陵墓的旁边是著福音者路喀和首召的使徒安德烈的陵墓。
