尼基佛尔的故事清楚地表明了上帝如何丢弃骄傲者，而将荣耀的冠冕赐予谦卑者和富有爱心的人。在安提约希亚居住着两位亲密的朋友，他们就是知识渊博的教士萨普里丘斯和普通百姓尼基佛尔。但是后来这两位朋友却成了仇人。畏惧上帝的尼基佛尔曾经多次想同这位教士和解。但是这位老教士却从来不想同尼基佛尔和解。当基督徒开始遭受迫害时，教士萨普里丘斯被判处死刑，并被带到刑场。悲伤的尼基佛尔一直跟在萨普里丘斯的后面，一路上，尼基佛尔恳求萨普里丘斯，希望他能够在他临死之前原谅他，以便死后得以享有平静。尼基佛尔哀求说：“哦，基督的殉道者，若我有什么地方得罪于你，我恳求你原谅我！”萨普里丘斯甚至都不想看上尼基佛尔一眼，傲慢地走上了刑场。上帝看到了这位教士的铁石心肠，于是上帝不想接受他的殉道，授予他荣耀的花环，而是上帝暗中收回了他的恩典。就在最后时刻，萨普里丘斯否认了基督，并表示他将跪拜偶像。这正是被仇恨蒙蔽了眼睛的写照。尼基佛尔恳求萨普里丘斯不要否认基督，对他说：“哦，我亲爱的兄弟，不要这样作；不要否认我们的主耶稣基督；不要失去天国的花环！”但是这一切都是徒劳的。萨普里丘斯顽固无比。而后，尼基佛尔恳求刽子手说：“我也是一名基督徒，请你斩首我吧，以代替萨普里丘斯！”刽子手将此通报给了法官，他命令释放萨普里丘斯，以尼基佛尔替代萨普里丘斯。尼基佛尔欣然地将自己的头放在断头台上被斩首。这样，他得到了天国荣耀且永恒的花环。这事发生在加列努斯在位时期的公元260年。
