佛提是教会伟大的灯塔。他是皇帝的亲属，同时也是荣耀的牧首塔拉赛的孙子。在教宗热衷于权势，以及罗马帝国将信仰歪曲的形势下，佛提捍卫了教会的纯正。仅仅在6天的时间内，他就从一个平信徒直升为牧首。佛提被按立为牧首的时间是公元857 年的圣诞节，他离世的时间为公元891 年。
