近代殉道者阿尔吉拉出生于布鲁萨，父母是虔诚的基督徒。阿尔吉拉与同是基督徒的丈夫结婚之后，邻居的一个土耳其人看上了她，并打算与她同居。但是虔诚的阿尔吉拉拒绝了这个土耳其人的厚颜无耻。这个土耳其非常生气，并在法官面前指控阿尔吉拉起初打算成为伊斯兰教徒后来却皈依了基督。阿尔吉拉为了基督遭受了15年的磨难，经过了多次法官的审判，从一个监狱辗转到另一个监狱。阿尔吉拉爱基督胜于这世间的一切。最后，阿尔吉拉于公元1725年在君士坦丁堡的监狱中死亡。
