艾弗冷出生于叙利亚一个贫苦的家庭，当时正是君士坦丁大帝在位期间。年轻时生活放荡不羁，但是他的灵魂突然间有了很大的改变，并开始转向主耶稣，对主耶稣充满了爱。艾弗冷是圣雅科弗?尼斯比斯（1月13日）的徒弟。出于来自上帝不尽的恩典，从他口中流出的智慧如同一条充满蜂蜜的小溪，从他眼中淌出源源不断的泪水。他有如一只勤劳的蜜蜂不停地写书，或教导修道院中的修士和埃德萨城中的百姓、或是自己进行祷告和默想。他的著作众多，祈祷优美。他最著名的杰作就是在大斋期内用的祷告词：
