伯里斯出生于一个异教家庭，在他的叔叔伯然和姐姐的影响下接受了浸礼皈依了基督。他接受浸礼后取名为弥哈伊尔。牧首佛提派出司祭前往保加利亚，为保加利亚人民进行浸礼。许多保加利亚的贵族拒绝这个新的信仰，不管怎样，这个基督教赢得了人民，同时沙皇弥哈伊尔也建立了很多教堂。基督教之所以能够在保加利亚和塞尔维亚人民当中建立，这要得益于圣基里尔和圣麦托迪“五个门徒”，他们五位用当地的方言－斯拉夫语传讲基督的知识。
