圣基里尔和圣麦托迪是亲兄弟，他们出生于德撒洛尼基一个富有显赫的家庭中，父亲是莱翁，母亲是玛利亚。兄长麦托迪曾经在马其顿的斯拉夫人当中作军官10年的时间，因此他懂得斯拉夫语。之后，麦托迪隐退到了奥林普斯山，并使自己在那里潜心修行。后来基里尔（君士坦丁）也步入兄长的后尘。当哈扎尔国王哈根在位期间向米加勒三世要求派遣基督传教士，他们找到了这二位兄弟，并将他们派遣到哈扎尔。这二位兄弟最终说服了哈根国王信奉基督，并连同国王以及大批国王的朝臣和子民进行施浸，皈依基督。一段时间之后，他们返回了君士坦丁堡，在那里，他们编纂了一个拥有38个字母的斯拉夫字母表，并着手将希腊文圣经翻译成斯拉夫文。在拉斯蒂斯拉夫王子的请求下，他们来到了摩拉维亚，在那里，他们传播并坚定当地的基督信仰、编辑书籍，并将这些书分发给当地的司祭，以教导年轻人。在教宗的请求下，基里尔来到了罗马，后来他在罗马病逝，于公元867年2月14日返回天国。麦托迪返回了摩拉维亚，在斯拉夫人当中增强他们的信仰，直到去世。麦托迪于官员885年4月6日离世，在他去世之后，他的五个门徒同圣克雷盟特一同穿越多瑙河南下到马其顿，从奥赫里德开始向斯拉夫人传讲基督福音，继续圣基里尔和圣麦托迪在北部开始的宣讲福音的工作。
