圣西尔维斯特出生于罗马，自幼熟识世界上的智慧和基督真道。他行事为人都以基督的教导为准则，并从提摩泰神父那里获得许多的教诲。他亲眼目睹了提摩泰的殉道，他以这位恩师英勇殉道的精神为榜样，并以此精神灌注了他整个一生。到了而立之年，他成为罗马的主教，对基督徒的教会生活习惯作出了某些修正，例如，直到当时，有为数众多的基督徒逢安息日守斋，圣西尔维斯特取消了周六的斋戒，下令只有在圣周的大安息日和一般斋期内的安息日才守斋。他又恒切祷告，施行灵迹，帮助带领君士坦丁大帝和他的母后艾莱尼归信基督。之后，他们双双接受浸礼，而圣西尔维斯特则同艾莱尼一道寻获基督圣十字架。圣西尔维斯特管理教会长达20年之久，他荣耀地结束了在世的生命，返回了天国。
