德西乌斯在位期间，基里尔于84岁高龄之际为基督遭受磨难。基里尔被投入大火中，但是出于上帝的天意他获得了拯救。后来，法官发布了如下的判决：“从大火中获救的基里尔，因为正义的审判不能容忍他的存活，因此，我下令将他斩首。”神圣的长老喜悦地将自己的头放在刀剑之下，由此而遭到了斩首，得以进入基督永生的王国。
