德奥多若20岁的时候成为修士，36年的时间里潜心修行。在弥哈伊尔皇帝和德奥多拉皇后在位期间，德奥多若成为埃德萨的主教。德奥多若于公元848年去世。需要提及的还有他的老师－柱头修士，徐利亚的圣德奥多西，他的兄弟隐士圣约安和圣阿德。圣阿德是一个富有的贵族，他离开了妻子接受剪发礼成为修士。
