裴特若是约安的儿子，也是首先被耶稣召选的门徒安得烈的兄弟。裴特若来自伯赛大，属于西缅的支派。裴特若原来是打鱼的，原本的名字叫做西门，但是主耶稣却愿叫他矶法，也就是裴特若：“于是领他去见耶稣。耶稣看着他说：‘你是约安的儿子西门，你要称为矶法（矶法翻出来就是裴特若）’”（约安福音／约／若1：42）。裴特若是耶稣门徒中首先表明对基督信仰的门徒，说：“你是基督，是永生上帝的儿子”（玛特泰福音／太／玛16：16）。裴特若非常爱主，同时，他对主的信仰也越来越深。当主被带去受审时，裴特若虽然三次不认识主，但是当他只看一眼主耶稣的面容，在他的心中就充满了羞愧和悔过。当圣灵降临后，裴特若变得无所畏惧，成了大有能力的福音传讲者。裴特若在耶路撒冷讲道时，有三千人皈依了主。裴特若传道的足迹遍及巴勒斯坦、小亚细亚、伊利里亚和意大利。裴特若行了很多奇迹：他治愈病人、使死人复活，甚至只要跟随他的影子，疾病就可以被治愈。裴特若曾经同一个名叫西门的魔术师进行过争斗，这个魔术师声称自己是上帝，其实却是撒旦的奴仆。最后，裴特若羞辱并战胜了他。西门的朋友，暴君尼禄皇帝下令将裴特若判处死刑。裴特若按立了利努斯为罗马的主教，并安抚众信徒之后，欣然走向死亡。当裴特若看到身后的十字架后，他要求杀手将他头朝下脚朝上钉在十字架上，因为他认为，主耶稣被钉死在十字架上，他不佩这样死。
