阿塔纳西出生于特雷比宗，父母敬畏上帝。阿塔纳西在幼年时就成了孤儿，但是由着上帝的天意，一个指挥官照管他，把他带到君士坦丁堡接受教育。由于阿塔纳西温和、谦卑，他的同伴们非常喜欢他。在这些孩子们做游戏时，孩子们选择了其中的一个作为国王，一个作为指挥官，而选择了阿塔纳西作为修道院院长，这似乎是一个预示。在完成教育之后，阿塔纳西（在接受剪发礼成为修士之前叫做亚伯拉罕）隐退到了靠近圣山阿托斯的名叫马雷诺斯的旷野中，在那里，他过着禁欲生活，作为当年著名的弥哈伊尔·马雷诺斯的门徒。阿塔纳西渴望过上一种更为艰苦的修行生活，于是他来到了圣山阿托斯过着宁静的修行生活。后来，许多欲想过禁欲生活的人都聚集在他的身边，由此他不得不修建了著名的拉瓦拉修道院。他修建修道院得到了拜占庭皇帝的帮助：起初是尼基佛尔·福卡斯，他也想过隐退生活，成为修士；在他之后是约安·茨米斯凯斯。阿塔纳西受到了来自魔鬼和人的许多诱惑，但是作为一名基督的勇士，用他无可言喻的温顺和连续不断向上帝祷告顽强地进行抵抗，并克服了一切。阿塔纳西充满了上帝的恩典，使他得以看到诞神女，诞神女奇迹般地从岩石中引出水来，并许诺说：她也将会成为修道院院长（伊克诺米莎，意思为修道院中负责生活物资的人）。阿塔纳西用劳作和祷告超越了他的众弟兄们，用神父和牧师般的爱来爱所有人。阿塔纳西的死亡是出于意外的。一次，阿塔纳西在同其他六名修士爬上一个新建的教堂门廊以检查正在修建的墙壁时，墙壁塌陷将他们埋在下面。就这样，这位禁欲修行的伟大明灯于公元980年去世。在阿塔纳西死后，他曾经多次向他的兄弟们显现，或是安慰他们，或是对他们进行责备。
