当鞑靼国王阿哈枚特围攻莫斯科时，王子约安·瓦西列维奇率领军队出征以保卫城市。尽管王子的军队论士兵数量和能力都不如鞑靼国王的军队，但是却获得了胜利。当时鞑靼人突然感到难以形容的恐惧，他们慌乱了手脚，仓惶逃跑了。大家都将这次意想不到的胜利归咎于诞神女圣像，俄罗斯人向诞神女圣像祷告，以求她拯救俄罗斯人逃脱鞑靼人之手。由此，俄罗斯人将6月23日这天用以纪念这个奇迹的发生。
