赫美亚斯直到年迈为止一直是皇宫中的士兵，在晚年时为基督而殉道。邪恶的法官试图说服赫美亚斯否认基督信仰，同时劝说赫美亚斯向偶像献祭，但是都没有获得成功，由此法官下令用石头将他的牙齿敲掉，并用刀子割刮他的面部。之后，他们将赫美亚斯投入到一个燃烧的火炉中，但是出于上帝的恩典，赫美亚斯安然无恙。而后，一个巫师泡制了一杯毒药让赫美亚斯喝下去，但是毒药对赫美亚斯没有起任何作用。看到这之后，巫师感到非常惊呆，而后他也表白了自己的基督信仰，但是立即遭到了斩首。在这之后，他们又将赫美亚斯的双眼挖了出来，但是赫美亚斯却没有感到任何的悲痛，他大声叫道："肉眼所看到的是这个虚空的世界，你们把这肉眼拿去吧！在我的心中还有一双眼睛，可以清晰地看到真理之光。"而后，他们将赫美亚斯头朝下脚朝上吊起来，但是这些施刑的刽子手们却都双目失明，在赫美亚斯周围团团转。赫美亚斯招呼他们过来，按手在他们身上，为他们向上帝祷告，使他们恢复了视觉。看到所有这一切之后，法官变得如同狮子般的愤怒，于是抽出刀剑，将赫美亚斯的头割了下来。基督徒们偷偷地收敛了赫美亚斯的尸体，荣耀地进行了埋葬。圣赫美亚斯于公元166年荣耀殉道，当时正是安托尼努斯在位期间。
