作为一位司祭的儿子，艾弗冷从小就渴望灵修和禁欲生活。当他的父母要他结婚时，他逃到了圣山阿托斯。后来，艾弗冷又返回了塞尔维亚，在伊巴尔峡谷和德卡尼修道院（科索沃）过着禁欲生活。当时国内为了争夺权势而发生了战争，不幸的是，也涉及到了教会，教务会议推选艾弗冷为牧首，接替1375年去世的萨瓦牧首。当他得知这个消息时痛哭流涕，但是又不能拒绝。艾弗冷于1382年为王子拉泽尔举行了加冕仪式，后来艾弗冷放弃了牧首职位，隐退到了旷野中，将牧首职位让给斯皮里顿。1388年斯皮里顿去世，拉泽尔沙皇要求艾弗冷继续接任牧首职位。艾弗冷管理塞尔维亚教会正值在科索沃战场上溃败的艰难时期（公元1389年），公元1400年艾弗冷去世，在88岁高龄之际得以进入他所爱的上帝的永生国度。艾弗冷的圣髑被保存在佩克修道院（科索沃）。
