圣维图斯出生于西西里的显赫之家，父母不是基督徒。莫德斯特是他的老师，而克雷森蒂亚是他的家庭教师。圣维图斯在年轻时就接受了浸礼，12岁那年隐退，过着禁欲生活。天使向他显现，引导他并使他在禁欲生活中得以强壮；而维图斯本人如同上帝的天使一样闪亮、美丽。曾经殴打维图斯的法官的手干枯了，但是维图斯通过祷告治愈了他的手。12个明亮的天使在他的屋子里显现，"天使的眼睛如同星星一样闪亮，脸象光一样"，维图斯的父亲看到这副景象之后眼睛失明了。维图斯通过祷告使父亲的眼睛重见光明。当他的父亲想杀害他的时候，一个天使向他显现，将他连同莫德斯特和克雷森蒂亚带到了斯拉里斯河畔的卢卡尼亚。在那里，维图斯治愈了不少病残者和精神病患者。应皇帝戴克里先的要求，维图斯来到了罗马，将魔鬼从皇帝的儿子身上驱赶出来；戴克里先非但没有报偿维图斯，反而对维图斯进行残忍的毒打，因为维图斯不敬拜那些不会说话的偶像。但是主使维图斯逃脱了一切的磨难，用其无形的手将维图斯带回到卢卡尼亚；维图斯、莫德斯特和克雷森蒂亚都在那里去世。圣维图斯的圣髑被安放在捷克的布拉格。
