阿摩司出生于伯利恒附近的提哥亚村。阿摩司出身于普通的人家，过着简朴的生活。阿摩司为耶路撒冷的一富有人家饲养猪。而上帝并不从外表看人，而是看其心的洁净，上帝拣选了摩伊息斯和大卫作为人民的领导，上帝也同样拣选了阿摩司作为他的先知。阿摩司指责乌西雅王和他的异教司祭敬拜偶像，并说服伯特利的人们放弃敬拜金牛，教导他们敬拜唯一的活的上帝。当异教司祭领导对阿摩司进行迫害时，阿摩司预言说：亚述人将征服以色列，他们将杀死国王以及亚玛谢的儿子，亚述士兵将在亚玛谢面前奸污他的妻子，因为亚玛谢致使人们与偶像通奸。所有这些预言都兑现了。异教司祭的儿子用杖重重地击打了阿摩司的前额，阿摩司摔倒在地。阿摩司被带回他的村庄提哥亚，在那里将灵魂交给了上帝。阿摩司生活在公元前8世纪。
