约安绰号为马维隆，即"黑色"。他接受过良好的教育，同时也是一个属灵的人。阿列克修斯·科盟努斯皇帝在位期间，约安在年迈之际成为欧凯塔的都主教。约安之所以有名望是因为圣瓦西里、圣格里哥利和圣金口约安（1月30日）曾经向他显现，告诉他他们三人在天国中如何平等地被荣耀。在这个异像之后，人们有关这三位圣人谁大谁小而进行的争论得以平息。圣约安也写了著名的《最甜美耶稣圣颂典》、《守护天使圣颂典》以及其他著作。约安于公元1100年平安离世。
