巴拿巴是七十圣徒之一。巴拿巴出生于塞浦路斯的一个富有家庭，属于利未族。他同扫罗一起学习，同属于迦玛列的学生。起初圣徒的名字是约熙福，后来叫做巴拿巴－即安慰之子，因为他能够出奇地安慰很多人的灵魂。在扫罗皈依基督教之后，巴拿巴首先将扫罗介绍给众圣徒，之后，同帕弗罗（扫罗）和玛尔克一起在安提约希亚及其他地区传讲福音。很有可能他是第一个在罗马和米兰讲道的圣徒。巴拿巴在塞浦路斯岛被犹太人杀死，玛尔克在萨拉米斯城的西门外将其安葬，在他的胸前手捧着由自己手抄下来的《玛特泰福音／太／玛》。巴拿巴的坟墓几百年不被人知晓，因为在他坟墓之地治愈了不少病人，由此该地方被称为“健康之地”。在泽诺皇帝在位期间以及在卡尔西顿大公会议召开时（公元451年），圣徒曾经连续三个晚上在梦中向塞浦路斯的总主教安特米乌斯显现，向他揭示坟墓的地点。圣徒显现的时期，当时渴望权利的安提约希亚牧首裴特若欲想使塞浦路斯教会处在安提约希亚教会的管辖之下。圣徒巴拿巴创造奇迹的圣髑被发现之后作了如下规定：作为圣徒教会的塞浦路斯教会应该是独立的。这样，塞浦路斯教会的独立由此而被确立。
