伊颇利图为信仰的缘故而遭难，时值克劳蒂乌斯在位期间。当时童贞女吉里萨为基督的缘故在罗马遭受残忍的酷刑，圣伊颇利图为她向施刑者求情，并强烈地谴责他们。由此，伊颇利图也被带到了法庭认定罪名成立，在经过长时间的折磨后，被判处死刑。他们将伊颇利图的手脚绑住，将其溺死在大海中。同伊颇利图和吉里萨一同遭受磨难的还有20名殉道者。圣伊颇利图于公元269年殉道。
