纪念圣伊格纳提的主要节期是在冬季的12月20日。今天是纪念他的圣髑从他殉道的地方－罗马迁移到安提约希亚，他早前在安提约希亚担任主教。当年圣伊格纳提奉召前往罗马到图拉真皇帝面前解释自己的信仰，在长途跋涉中有几名安提约希亚的信众一直陪伴他，他们这样做是出于对这位好牧人的极大的爱。他绝不肯否认基督的信仰，这位上帝的圣人面对图拉真皇帝的威逼利诱坚定不移，最后他被判处死刑，并被投到玛克西默竞技场的野兽面前。凶猛的野兽将他肢解，由此伊格纳提把灵魂交给了上帝。陪同伊格纳提的人收殓了他的圣髑，将其带到安提约希亚，荣耀地进行了埋葬。在公元6世纪波斯人攻陷安提约希亚时，圣伊格纳提的圣髑又重新从安提约希亚迁移到罗马。
