圣玛克西默出生于君士坦丁堡，起初，他是希拉克略皇帝的高级朝臣。之后，他在帝都附近的修道院出家，后被推举为院长。他是驳斥所谓基督一意论异端中正教最伟大的捍卫者。这种邪说其实就是改头换面的一性论异端，一性论宣扬说基督只有一种本性，一意论则说基督只有一个意志。圣玛克西默因为反对这一邪说而遭到皇帝和牧首的排斥。圣人不畏权贵，忍耐到底，证明基督有两种本性也有两个意志。经过他的一番努力，召开了两次公会议，一次是在迦太基，另一次是在罗马，这两次会议都将基督一意论断为异端。圣玛克西默为正道承受了难以形容的苦难：王子对他施以非人酷刑、主教们欺骗他、众人唾弃他、士兵狱卒殴打他，被放逐、被监禁，最后，他被割去舌头和右手，并被判处终身流放到斯基马里斯岛（黑海附近的巴图姆地区）。在那里，他渡过了三年的牢笼生活，最后于公元666年安息归主。
