裴特若出生于巴勒斯坦的埃罗特罗波利斯。在皇帝玛克息弥安统治时期，公元311年，年轻的裴特若因基督信仰的缘故受尽了折磨，并被判极刑。当听到自己被判处死刑的时候，他欣喜地欢呼道：“为我的上帝舍命，确是我的夙愿！”裴特若如同主基督一样，被钉死于十字架上。
