格里高利是大圣瓦西里的兄弟。起初，格里高利只是一位司祭，因为他有家室；当他的妻子－蒙福的德奥赛维亚去世后，格里高利被选按立为尼撒城的主教。他因博学多才以及富有属灵经验而声名卓著。他参加了第二次普世大公会议（君士坦丁堡，公元381年）。人们普遍认为，《信经》的后半部分是他撰写的。格里高利在讲道、释经和神学方面卓有成就。那些阿里乌派异端者在与他的斗争中无法取胜，于是他们将格里高利视若最大的仇敌，对他格外攻击。因此，当与他们思想一致的同盟——瓦伦斯皇帝统治时期，他们撤除格里高利的主教职务，并将其流放。这位神圣的主教被流放长达八年之久，期间，忍受了各种苦难和羞辱。格里高利最后于公元4世纪末高龄之际方离世安眠，进入基督永生的国度。多个世纪以来，格里高利如同教会的一盏明灯，永远照耀着正信者的心灵。
