托玛斯生活于玛弗里基和福卡斯在位期间，当时正是斋戒者圣约安和西里亚卡担任牧首时期。由于托玛斯对信仰的敬畏和热忱，引起了牧首圣约安的注意，并被他提升为牧首副手。西里亚卡去世后，托玛斯被选为牧首。当时发生了一次非同小可的事件。在一次十字架巡游的过程中，这些十字架开始自己摆动，并开始相互碰撞。所有的人都为此感到震惊。当牧首得知这一事情时，将德奥多若·斯克昂请来，因为他是一位著名的具有“悟察恩典”的隐士。牧首请求德奥多若向他解释这个事件预示着什么。德奥多若向上帝祷告，之后解释给牧首说，这是凶兆的象征，不仅对教会，对希腊帝国也是如此，因为内部政教的不和，从而导致了基督徒之间的互相残杀。结果，事过不久就应验了。托玛斯请求德奥多若向上帝祷告，希望在这惨剧出现之前上帝能够接他返回天家。德奥多若问托玛斯说：“你的意思就是说，我随你而后，我们在上帝面前相会吗？”这就是德奥多若对牧首的回答，这表明了牧首在不久的将来就会离世。就在同一天，牧首托玛斯病倒了，不久便离世而去。他去世后不久，德奥多若也随他而去。圣托玛斯于公元610年得以进入基督的国都。
