亚历山大来自庞菲利亚省的西德市。有一次，奥雷里乌斯皇帝委任的官员问亚历山大：“你是谁？”亚历山大回答说，他是基督羊群的牧人。这位官员又带有恶意地问道，“那羊群在哪里？”亚历山大回答说：“世人都是上帝所创造的，而信靠主基督的人都是他的绵羊；但是那些离弃了创造者，成为世上万物的奴隶，如同阁下一样敬拜偶像的就是离群的羊；到了审判日，就会被放到上帝的左边，成为山羊了。”邪恶的法官命令首先对亚历山大进行鞭打，而后将其投入到火炉中。但是火炉并没有烧伤他。之后，又对亚历山大施以剥皮之苦，而后将其投到野兽面前，但是野兽并不理睬。最后，这个邪恶的法官命令将亚历山大斩首，但是当他刚作出这个宣判时，他立即就被污鬼缠身，变得疯疯癫癫。他失常地大声吼叫，被众人簇拥着去求拜偶像，他那邪恶的灵魂离开了他的身躯。亚历山大在公元270－275年间遭受了磨难。
