圣玛克西默出生于希腊，因受到沙皇瓦西里的邀请而去了俄国，受命管理皇家图书馆，并翻译经典。他辛勤劳碌，同时也为真理遭受了很多磨难，在监狱中渡过了很长的时间，并在牢中写了著名的圣灵圣颂典，至今仍在教会中沿用。玛克西默于公元1556年荣归主怀。
