德奥多特充满智慧和爱心，由此他被选为主教，并用爱和热情管理上帝的教会。在李锡尼皇帝在位期间开始对基督徒进行迫害，这位虔诚的圣人被带到法庭受审，并遭受了多次严刑拷打。当施刑者萨维纳劝说他否认基督时，德奥多特回答说：“你若是知道我所信仰的上帝的美善，以及这短暂的痛苦能够为我带来的永生时，你也会宁愿与我一同受苦。”施刑者开始用铁钉击打他的身体，德奥多特却依然向上帝祷告感谢。当德奥多特想到自己临终已经不远时，他对围聚在他身边的基督徒进行教诲。出于上帝的天意，当时君士坦丁大帝宣布基督徒获得自由，并下令将所有被判刑的基督徒都释放。由此，德奥多特获得了释放，返回了基瑞尼亚重新作主教。德奥多特又在世生活了多年才离世，于公元302年荣耀归主。
