在希腊王希拉克略统治时期，波斯王科兹罗耶斯于公元614年袭击了耶路撒冷。科兹罗耶斯洗劫了耶路撒冷，将基督荣耀的十字架运到了波斯，并逮捕了大量的基督徒，遭到逮捕的人当中就有牧首匝哈利亚。犹太人也助纣为虐反对基督徒。有关犹太人所行的邪恶，有以下的记载：犹太人从科兹罗耶斯那里购买了9万名基督徒作为他们的奴隶，而后将他们全部杀掉。年迈的匝哈利亚被沦为奴隶长达14年之久。期间，由于荣耀的十字架的作用，在波斯出现了很多的奇迹，甚至波斯人都说：“基督徒的上帝临到了波斯。”后来，希腊王希拉克略强迫波斯将荣耀的十字架以及牧首和剩余的被囚犯返还给耶路撒冷。希腊王希拉克略亲自背上十字架进入圣城耶路撒冷。圣匝哈利亚安祥地渡过了他的余生，直到公元631年荣耀归主。匝哈利亚去世后，莫德斯图斯接任了牧首职位，再往后就是索弗若尼（3月11日）接任牧首。
