基督的殉道者阿塔纳西是个单纯的人，他家境贫困，生活清苦，但是对信仰非常虔诚，且因上帝圣灵的感召拥有聪慧之恩。有一次，阿塔纳西无意中同一位土耳其人就信仰问题展开了辩论。这个土耳其人受到过良好的教育，能言善辩，但是阿塔纳西竭尽全力宣讲、维护基督信仰，并指明基督信仰胜于伊斯兰教。之后，他们分道扬镳。第二天，阿塔纳西被法庭传唤，这个土耳其人作为原告站在那里。法官命令阿塔纳修斯否认基督教信仰，（因为依照那土耳其人所言，阿塔纳修斯前一日已经向同伴表明了这一立场），并信奉伊斯兰教。阿塔纳西高呼道：“我宁可舍命千次，也不愿否认基督正道。”因此，他被判处死刑，于公元1700年在斯米尔那被斩首。他的圣髑被奉安于该城的圣帕拉斯凯维教堂内。
