年青的时候，奥努弗利曾跟父母斗气，并在土耳其人面前扬言要皈依伊斯兰教。但他随即因出口狂言而懊悔不已，并进入了阿托斯圣山的悉蓝达尔修道院，剪发出家成为克修者。由于受到良心上谴责，他一心要以身殉道。他作出了决定，并领受了他神师的祝福，奥努弗利离开修道院前往保加利亚的特尔诺夫，并在那里向土耳其人表示自己是基督徒，并在他们面前嘲笑穆罕默德。因此，年仅32岁的奥努弗利被斩首，时为1818年1月4日，但是这位精神勇士的圣髑并没有被保存下来，因为土耳其人将其投入了大海。
