玛拉希亚是历史上先知中的最后一位。公元前538年，被掠的犹太人从巴比伦人手中获释，归回故土，玛拉希亚就是在这之后出生的。他容貌出众，据说，他被人称为天使，原因可能就是他的外貌俊秀，或是因为他品性纯洁，甚至也有可能是因为他与天使的关系密切。据记载，玛拉希亚曾多次面对面同天使直接进行对话，此时，其他的人只不过听到天使的声音而已，并不配见天使的面容。天使向年轻的玛拉希亚所宣布的一切，他都如实向世人传达了。他痛斥忘恩负义的以色列人以及无法无天的祭司。基督降世500年以前，玛拉希亚就已明确预言施浸者约安将要出现，且明言他的作为：“看哪！我要差事我的使者、在我前面预备道路”（玛拉希亚书／玛／拉3：1）。总的来说，玛拉希亚是可怕的审判日的预言者：“看哪！上主大而可畏之日未到以前，我必差遣先知以利亚到你们那里去。他必使父亲的心转向儿女，儿女的心转向父亲，免得我来诅咒遍地”（玛拉希亚书／玛／拉3：23－24）。玛拉希亚年纪轻轻就魂归于主，直到施浸者约安出现之前，以色列再也没有出现先知。
