圣莱翁生活在位于埃特纳火山脚下的卡塔尼亚镇，他是信众的好牧人和一位富有同情心的良师。他非常关心病人和穷人。他对不幸的人富有极大的同情心，他对信仰同样有巨大的热情。一个名叫海辽多鲁斯的魔术师来到了卡塔尼亚镇，他利用各种技法迷惑了人们，大大败坏年轻人的品行。有一次在举行圣礼时海辽多鲁斯走进了上帝的教堂，并开始了他的把戏。圣莱翁将海辽多鲁斯捆绑在他祭衣的尾端，将他带到了城市中的一个集市上。在这里，莱翁叫人生起一堆火，当火烧起来的时候，他站到了火中，并将海辽多鲁斯也拉到火中。海辽多鲁斯被化为灰烬，而莱翁却完好无损。所有被这个魔术师迷惑认为他有某种神性的人都感到羞愧。富有同情心且热情的莱翁所行的伟大奇迹在国内传开，同时也用他那光芒四射的奇迹帮助众人。莱翁于公元8世纪去世，得以进入基督永生的天国，从他的圣髑里经常流出没药来。
