圣婴出生后第八日,根据以色列自阿弗拉穆以来的律法,被带到圣殿中施行割礼。在割礼的仪式上,圣婴被命名为耶稣,也就是天使长伽弗里伊尔当初向童贞女玛利亚宣布的。旧约时代的割礼也就是新约时代浸礼的雏形。主耶稣接受了割礼,显示出了他真正取了人的性体降生,而并非是后来的异端者所说的,只是具有表面的人类形象而已。主耶稣接受割礼的另一个原因,是因为他要成全律法,而这律法是他以前向先知和以色列的列祖列宗所启示的。耶稣用他神圣的教会浸礼来代替成全律法的规则,正如圣使徒帕弗罗所说:“受割礼不受割礼都无关紧要,要紧的就是作新造的人。”(致噶拉塔人书/加/迦6:15)(教会的周年礼书中,对于主基督的割礼纪念日没有设置节日预备期和后续庆期)
