Преподобният Атанасий се родил в град Константинопол от благочестиви родители. Те живеели богоугоден живот и били много богати. От дете той се отличавал с благоговейно настроение на душата и любима мечта на младостта му била да прекара живота си в монашеско звание. Затова след достигане на пълнолетие той се отдалечил в една от Никомидийските обители и там приел монашеско пострижение. В монашеските си подвизи преподобният достигнал такава висота, че с благочестието си станал известен на самия император.
